Google Meet now has live translation, with the help of Gemini AI

21 May 2025 — Google has launched a new and very useful feature for Google Meet at its annual event Google I/O 2025. Now real-time speech translation is available during conversations in Google Meet, and it is being powered by Google’s advanced AI model — Gemini AI.

Here’s the Bottom Line

  1. The new live translation using Gemini AI makes it possible for everyone on Google Meet to understand each other as they speak in real time, retaining voice and emotion throughout the meeting.
  2. Beating Microsoft – Thanks to more accurate, fast and relevant translations, Google has an advantage in the world of AI communication.
  3. If fully implemented, this feature may greatly increase how well international teams work together by instantly clearing language obstacles.

The special thing about this feature is that it translates your language into the other person’s preferred language while you speak. And not only this — this translation also retains the speaker’s original voice, tone and emotions, making the conversation sound more natural.

This feature launched in beta version on 20 May 2025 and is currently available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. It initially supports English and Spanish, with Italian, German and Portuguese coming in the coming weeks.

What’s special:

  • Live Translation – In real-time, without delay.
  • Voice Preservation – The speaker’s voice and emotions are preserved despite the translation.
  • Dual Audio – Translated audio plays softly alongside the original voice.
  • Currently in beta – Available only to AI Pro and Ultra users.

Competition with Microsoft

Microsoft Teams also recently introduced a similar feature, but Google claims that its translations through Gemini AI are more accurate, context-based and faster. This will make international meetings and global teamwork much easier.

“We want people to feel as if they are talking face-to-face when they communicate on Meet, without the language barrier,” a Google spokesperson said.

Future plans

This feature is currently available to a limited number of users, but it is planned to be made available to Workspace users by the end of 2025. This feature will be especially beneficial for companies and teams that work in different languages.
